GYROS- MY NEW FOUND LOVE
As many of you know, James & I went on a cruise for our honeymoon and Greece was one of our many stops. Our cruise docked in both Katakolon & Santorini where we enjoyed authentic Greek gyros & holy moly they were DELICIOUS. For those of you who don’t know, gyros typically have meat (chicken, lamb, or pork), tzatziki, tomato, onion & fries in them and I must say, the meat in Greece would just melt in your mouth. Before our trip, I had never had a gyro before in my life, so it’s safe to say that these were life changing. Ever since then, James and I have not been able to stop talking about gyros!!! A few weeks ago we even went looking for a restaurant here in Cali that made them (we hit the jackpot and found one of our new fave hole-in-the-walls called New York Chicken & Gyro). Enjoy some pics of my gyros below:

James got off work late last night and our fridge was basically empty but we were really craving gyros, so we decided to go to the Walmart Neighborhood Market across the street and buy the ingredients to make our own. We were so hungry, almost to the point of being hangry, so we knew we needed to make these gyros QUICK. And BAM, I had the bright idea of buying a rotisserie chicken rather than having to make our own chicken at home. This is where I found out that Walmart sells half of a rotisserie chicken for only $2.50, so I dropped that in my cart with amazement. Then we went on to buying our other ingredients. I went in thinking we would have to make our own Tzatziki(a delicious Greek sauce), but I found some premade Tzatziki in the hummus aisle, making my life a little easier. All in all, these gyros were DELISH and soooooo affordable to make, I added it up and it costs about $2 to make one gyro and let me tell you, one will FILL YOU UP! We got everything we needed and off to the kitchen we went! Here’s what we used & how we did it & what it cost:

THE RECIPE
*Recipe makes 4 gyros*
INGREDIENTS
Olive Oil Drizzle
4 Pita Flat Breads
½ Bag of Frozen French Fries
8 Tbsp Tzatziki Sauce
1 Medium Tomato
1 Small Red Onion
½ Rotisserie Chicken
Dash of Season Salt
Dash of Paprika
STEPS
1. Get your frozen French fries in the oven & follow the packet for cooking instructions. Add some paprika & season salt on top once fries are half way cooked.
2. Break up the rotisserie chicken into small bite sized pieces & make sure to throw out all the bones.
4. Heat a drop of olive oil on a frying pan and warm up the pita flatbread for about 3-4 minutes, flipping it once.
5. Chop the red onion & tomato.
6. Spread a generous amount of taziki sauce (about 2tbsp per gyro) on the warm pita bread. 7. Add the chicken, fries, tomato, red onion & sprinkle paprika on top.
8. Roll in half- kind of like a taco and stuff your face.
COST
Papa Pita Greek Pita Flatbread: $2.26
Half Rotisserie Chicken: $2.56
Medium Tomato: $0.45
Red Onion: $0.78
Tzatziki Sauce: $4.76 (this is huge and you won’t use it all for this recipe so I will only count about $2.50 for this recipe, but can use the rest as dip for veggies)
Bag of Frozen French Fries: $1.00
TOTAL: $11.81
$2.37 per Gyro !!!!
